(preface,

WALTON-LE-DALE, so called to distinguish it from Walton, near Liverpool, is distant from Preston 2 miles, S.E., on the road to Blackburn.

The Church is dedicated to St. Leonard. Anciently it was called Law or Low Church, and is mentioned as early as 1166 in a Charter of Henry de Lascy [See Whalley Coucher Book, page 83, Chetham Society, O.S., Vol. 10] .

It was formerly a Parochial Chapelry and a Chapel of ease to Blackburn, but is now distinct from the parent Church. Cuerdale, which was included in Walton-le-Dale, has now a separate Church and Vicar of its own.

The Registers here transcribed date from 1653 to 1812.

Volume I., measuring 14m. x gin., consists of 41 leaves of parchment, and contains entries from 1653-1698. It is bound in millboard.

Volume II., measuring 15m. x 7m., consists of 55 leaves of parchment, and contains entries from 1698.

At the end of this Volume is a collection ot " Papist " baptisms.

Volume III., measuring 15m. x 7jin., consists of 104 leaves of parchment.

VI.

Volume IV., measuring i3|in. x 8in., is mainly blank, only 9 leaves at one end of the book and 7 leaves at the other being written on. Volumes 2, 3 and 4 are bound in leather.

The other three Volumes are merely the official printed Forms for Marriage supplied in accordance with Lord Hardwicke's Act.

All the Transcripts found in the Bishop's Registry at Chester which furnish entries for years not found in the original Registers are here printed.

The Transcript is a copy of the original, but the words " were baptized," " were married," " were buried," have not been repeated after each entry.

The thanks of the Society are due to the Rev. E. J. M. Davies, Vicar of Walton-le-Dale, not only for granting permission to transcribe the Registers, but also for his great kindness in granting facilities for the transcription. And gratitude is equally due to the Diocesan Registrar at Chester.
