The first CATUG meeting I attended was in November of 1988 at the invitation of Butch Weinberg. At that time Steve Cooper was the meeting coordinator seeing to it that there was always a room available to us at the Downers Grove Public Library. In April of 1989 Steve invited us to his home near by so that I might demonstrate the new club BBS which at that time was running оп а PDP 11/60 located in Schaumburg, Illinois. Steve decided at that meeting that providing his home for club meetings was easier than setting up once a month at the library and the new location of the CATUG clubhouse with the Dutch front door was born.

Steve Cooper became our Vice President in January of 1991. His favorite machine was the TS2068 with a John Oliger Disk Drive interface attached. To this he had connected two 5.25" 80 track disk drives. Steve preferred NMI saves over running the programs as they would have run from tape. A RAINBOW interface plugged into the rear of the Oliger interface provided Steve with a Spectrum ROM and a Kempston Joystick input. The Oliger printer interface given to him by Jay Shepard of Boxholm, IOWA, provided Steve with the

interface needed to drive his MEMOTECH full sized printer. Also connected to his system was a trusty WESTRIDGE 2050 modem, however, he kept it around for our use rather than his own use. A G.E. data recorder proved to be the most reliable tape machine for his system even though he also had a TS2020 tape machine. The Video was provided by an AMDEK Color Monitor. All this was contained in а bookcase arrangement with manuals and disks in easy reach.

On the opposite side of the room was a desk with a second TS2068 set-up which used an Apple Color Monitor. This machine allowed a young neighbor boy to come over and try out a couple of plug-in game cartridges from time to time. It also was the unit we used to plug in a visiting LarKen Disk System or peripheral requiring repair.

On the dinning room table Steve kept a wooden cabinet which contained a QL setup he only seemed to have open when the club meeting day arrived.

Because of the more relaxed meeting place this new club house provided, meetings would run from 1 PM to almost 6 PM. Steve often provided a light dinner of hamburgers or hot dogs and other goodies. Steve also had the best 7152068 software collection of us all and was often showing us software titles none of us had ever seen before. All this neat stuff at one location and Steve's wonderful hospitality made his home a great place to meet and call ‘Our Clubhouse’.

On December 23, 1995 the Dutch door of the old club house closed for the final time when Vice President Steve Cooper left us to be with the LORD. Steve will be remembered and loved long into the next century by the friends he

opened his home to for all those years.

SECRETARY'S NotePad

November 18, 1995

During the entire month, no newsletters came in from other groups. Also, as members were contacted and many regretted not being able to attend, the normally scheduled meeting was canceled.

December 30, 1995

Meeting began at approximately 3:10 P.M. Those present were Bob Swoger, Larry Sauter, John Donaldson, Cy Herre, Bob Muth and Phil Kwitkowski.

There is a program that runs on the TS2068 and Spectrum called ZX-pert. It is a program that asks questions of the user and LEARNS from the answers. It then becomes an EXPERT on that subject. Our Vice-President, Steve Cooper, was much like that program. Steve had through the years worked in many areas and had become an expert in those areas. It was from Steve that we learned one negative side to the MINERAL OIL we used on the T/S computers to keep them from crashing, MINERAL OIL makes rubber SWELL! We added that warning to our mineral oil articles and hopefully no one will ever let it get into the keyboards of their computers. Steve left us suddenly to be with the LORD on December 23, 1995. We all loved Steve and will greatly miss him.

Bob Swoger sent two groups an inquiry as to why he hadn't received newsletters from them for such long time. Barry Washington sent back a reply explaining that the chair for editor had been vacant for a certain period and therefor several newsletters had not been published. Barry is now the editor of the CATS

newsletter, the Capital Area Timex Sinclair Group. Four issues arrived and they were greatly appreciated.

John Donaldson had the idea of running off a video tape of the Oak Ridge Fest and add to it a video of our group to send around to the other groups and have them do same. We could see what the rest of the groups look like after years of reading about their groups. The CATS group said they would be very interested in the video.

Frank Davis has separated from his partner's branch of the Mechanical Affinity business and will become FWD Computing. We wish him the best of luck in this new venture.

Bob made a phone call to Al Feng and sent him some software that might allow him to increase the picture size to circumvent the QL emulator having a 9 inch picture on a 13 inch Monitor. Called Ultra, it changes the font and fills the screen on the borrowed laptop brought in from Motorola.

The annual election for officers was held. The former officers were retained and John Donaldson became our vice- president

The meeting adjourned at 3:43 P.M.

UNINTERRUPTABLE POWER SUPPLY

by Al Feng

Several months ago, I got the UPS (uninterruptable power supply) and TAPE BACKUP that I had previously contemplated. Unless you only play games, the UPS is a good idea no matter what computer you are using. It seems like a particularly good investment to protect a QXL card from any jeopardy.

While I experienced power outages with every-other thunder-storm when I lived in Taos, this has not been a problem while living in Albuquerque. Of course, the weather-wise might suggest that it is because it has NOT rained in my neck-of-the-woods for the past two Summers! Still, living "іп the city" is no assurance

against a power failure -- construction crews with a back- hoe have been known to have the same net effect as a lightning strike in the nearby mountains!

The price on smaller units seems to have come down by about 33% in the past year; so

you should not have a problem e find a 250 VA unit for under 80.

The UPS may be one of the better computing investments I have made (behind the QL, the FALKENBERG keyboard interface, the GOLD CARD, the QXL, and DBEasy ... not necessarily in the particular order listed).

So, my power to my QXL is stable. I just hope that "original" QXL users who bought their QXL's a couple of years ago continue to receive uninterrupted SMSQ upgrades until the operating system is considered to be stable.

HAPPY TRAILS, AND COMPUTING, TO YOU ...

STARTING OUR TENTH YEARI

by Bob Swoger

Here in Chicago we enjoy hearing that there are still other Sinclair groups still meeting all around North America sixteen years after it all started. Four Sinclair Platforms have held our interest, the ZX81/TS1000, Spectrum/TS2068, QL and Z88. We have improved and grown accustomed to the now mature Software we have available for these machines. And when there is some task that needs doing by a computer, it is the Sinclair that we feel comfortable with to obtain the necessary results.

It was the Sinclair that gave us our first taste of home computing. Some have moved completely away from the Sinclair platforms, but of those I know that still use

Sinclairs, most all of them including myself also use other computers. We have found that each different computer does a particular thing well and other things not as well as some other computer can do. We get along on each of these other computers as well as we do because of the understanding of computers we gained by using the Sinclair machine. I personally built two sheds, carpeted the house, calculated the necessary material to re- roof our home, helped manage the church budget and do my income taxes each year with my TS2068.

Sinclair users attending fests around the country have reported that not only are people going after the new items, they are also going for more accessory and software swapping as well as getting together to reminisce of times gone bye. Remember the delight of seeing all those colorful ads for new less expensive Sinclair Computers, software and accessories that somehow were no longer available when we had finally saved enough to purchase them? The fests have become gathering places for Sinclair users to meet eyeball to eyeball seeing sometimes for the first time faces for the names we had only read about through the years.

So sixteen years after the Sinclair ZX80, here are twenty- two of us from the Chicago area still using Sinclair computers. Our group includes Steve Cooper, John Donaldson, Cy Herre, Phil Kwitkowski, Gary Lessenberry, Leo Majewski, Frank Mills, Bob Muth, Jon Pagano, Nazir Pashtoon, Larry Sauter, Bob Swoger, George Zimmerman, and out of towners Jeff Decourtney, Mark Dorinson, Al Feng, Abed Kahale, Frank Kapel, Dave Lebowicz, Jay Shepard, Grant Thomas and Lee Thoresen. CATUG now begins its tenth year of existence.

аа.

вв Sal” TU Perron .. The members presented here that

In the first issue of 1995, you were introduced to Jeff Decourtney now living in Albuquerque, New Mexico near Al Feng. Jeff is now about to add LarKen and a Modem to his TS2068 system. This time we wish to submit a group shot of some members that regularly attend our meetings.

PÈ-

you might take pleasure in seeing their faces after reading their names for so long are from let to right TS2068 user Secretary Larry Sauter, TS2068 user Abed Kahale, QL user John Donaldson, TS2068 user Editor Bob Swoger, QL user President Nazir Pashtoon, TS2068 user Treasurer Phil Kwitkowski .

As CATS has shown us 3D Magic Eye kinds of pictures in their newsletters, we though we would present one here for all our readers to enjoy. If you focus just right you will see this group photo in 3D. John Donaldson inadvertently took photos that could be used as a left and a right. Interestingly, he belongs to a 3D camera club! We turned our Photos into RLEs to display on our TS2068s. This really looks neat on two side by side TS2068s running Jack Dohany's QRL program on two Magnavox monitors. You need to sit back from the screens a bit, though, and kind of cross your eyes.

Not only is the Chicago group still going, but it is reported to us that the Milwaukee, Long Island, ос, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Dayton, Michigan, Vancouver and Indiana groups still meet. Also, QBOX of

“Michigan, SOL of Tucson, SCC of

Miami and TSNUG of Illinois supply Sinclair users with 24 hour BBS service.
