Rare American and Foreign Coins.
ADDENDA.
RAKE AMERICAN AND FOREIGN COINS.
From the cabinet of a well-known Collector.
Coin buyers are often surprised to see in their priced catalogues rare coins — catalogued with all the adjective modifications necessary to create in the mind of the collector an impression of superiority of condition — bring, when actually sold, indifferent, if not low prices. This may at times be due to a scarcity of appreciative buyers, but more frequently per- haps to the fact that the coins were described in their “ to be wished for” rather than “actual” condition. Experienced professional buyers generally reject such coins, or cancel their orders, and consequently the prices realized agree rather with the “actual” than the “ imagined ” con- dition, much to the astonishment of the distant buyer, who jumps at the conclusion that the bottom has fallen out of the coin market, because a “ very fine, chocolate color” Ameri cent of 1793 sold for $3.25, or a dime of 1796, “hair slightly rubbed,” only yielded $1.25. In justice to the owner of this small lot of fine and mostly rare coins, 1 desire to state that in the following, as in all my descriptions, 1 have endeavored, honestly I know, and successfully 1 hope, to represent the coins in their exact and positive condition, without the least amplifications or imaginative em- bellishments whatsoever : —
